Seven Practices

Food

The first practice of Beyond Domestication looks at our food. Food is the most thought-consuming practice shared by every single human on the planet. One of the major differences between plants and animals is that we are tied by the demand to find and consume enough food to sustain the additional energy required to run our physically active bodies.

Since the agricultural revolution 12,000 years ago, we have been on a path of disconnection from our food. For most of us, it is now possible to feed ourselves without having any clear understanding of where that food has come from and, most of all, how it was grown. This disconnection from our food has enabled us to build the society we are a part of today, but it also hurts us.

Along with many other destructive processes, we now rely heavily on both antibiotics and fertilisers to maintain the low costs that the market has come to expect. The choices we all make dictate the future of both our health and the survival of the planet. We owe it ourselves to make the best possible decisions we can about the food that sustains us.
